19th USBTC Wraps up with Jeff Beckley Winning 8-Ball Division
CSI’s 19th Annual US Bar Table Championships concluded Sunday, with Jeff Beckley going undefeated in the 8-Ball Division. The first year for the USTBC at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino was a rousing success. It’s been a fantastic week of championship caliber pool, with outstanding performances in all three divisions: 10-Ball, 9-Ball and 8-Ball.
The 8-Ball Division kicked off on Friday, with 189 entries in the Men’s Division and 46 entries in the Women’s Division. All tables were in play, as there were three tournaments being contested simultaneously, the Men’s and Women’s USTBC 8-Ball, and a WorldPPA handicapped 9-Ball Tournament.
Jeff Beckley, who hails from Indiana, had an impressive tournament run. Jeff finished undefeated and notched wins over notable players such as Jose Parica, Larry Nevel, Francisco Bustamante and Robb Saez. His win/loss totals were an impressive 45-18.
Jeff started out the final day, with a hotseat match with Francisco Bustamante. Jeff played solid and capitalized on a few uncharacteristic mistakes from Francisco. Francisco was a favorite going in, as he had a very impressive run on Saturday. Jeff sent Francisco to the loser’s bracket with a 5-3 win and then went back to his room to relax until his 7:00 match.
Meanwhile, Robb Saez was all business on Sunday. His eyes were set on Jeff Beckley, but he would have to beat a host of champions to get there. Robb started off by knocking out Rodney Morris 5-2, and then sent Larry Nevel packing with a 5-0 win. Next up for Robb was Oscar Dominguez, who was having a great tournament himself.
Oscar was sent to the loser’s side late Saturday night by Francisco Bustamante, in a match where Oscar would get only two shots. Francisco broke and ran the first game. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball got kicked in and Francisco ran out. Then, Francisco broke and ran out. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball was kicked in again, and Francisco ran out. Francisco then broke and ran the final game, for a 5-0 win. In all, Oscar had only two shots in the match, both break shots.
Oscar would give Robb all he could handle though on Sunday, and they went hill-hill with Robb needing to bank his last solid cross side and draw his cueball into the 8-ball, which was tied up on another ball. It was a do or die shot, where any part of the shot going wrong would result in an easy out and a win for Oscar. Undaunted, Robb drilled the bank and drew softly into the 8-ball, freeing it up for an easy shot to win the set.
Up next for Robb, was Francisco Bustamante. Robb had everything rolling for him though at this point, and great play and a few rolls allowed him to move on to the finals with a 5-4 victory over “Django."
The finals got underway at 7:00 pm with Robb Saez needing to beat Jeff Beckley twice. Up until this point, it seemed destiny was on Robb’s side, but Jeff was not going to be denied. First Jeff got an early lead at 3-0, and then Robb crept back with a couple of games. Jeff got to the hill first, and had a few opportunities to close out the match, but couldn’t cash in on them. Jeff would need to keep his composure and put his missed opportunities behind him, if he wanted to end this in one set. Jeff would keep it together, and with a straight in 8-ball down the rail, he won his first USBTC 8-Ball Title.
Congratulations to Jeff Beckley with his 1st place finish and Robb Saez for finishing 2nd. Francisco Bustamante finished 3rd and Oscar Dominguez came in 4th. First paid $5700, 2nd paid $3300, 3rd paid $2000 and 4th paid 1200.
On the Women’s side, Stacy Allsup went undefeated and matched up with Melissa Little in the finals. Melissa would need to beat Stacy two sets to come out on top, but fell short, losing the first set 4-2. Congratulations to Stacy Allsup on her 1st place finish pocketing $875 and Melissa Little on her 2nd place finish and a $550 prize.
In the All Around Bonus, there was a three way tie for 1st place, between Shane Van Boening, Glenn Atwell and Jeff Beckley. They split $3500 in added Bonus money provided by CSI. On the Women’s side, Rebecca Wagner took home an additional $500 for 1st place and Stacy Allsup took home $250.

The Lion Leaps to 2nd Consecutive Swanee Win
Named for beloved southern California player, Jay Swanson, the 16th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (“the Swanee”) was hosted February 4-5 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. A tournament steeped in tradition, the event is a virtual who’s who of west coast US and Pacific Rim players. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by Hard Times Billiards, CSI and the Magic Ball Rack, the event is known for being a two day grinder with a heady 192 player field of heavy hitters.
It is no small feat to cash in this event, but this year history took place. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan won for a second consecutive year surviving a litany of fellow well known names including former Swanee champions Dave Hemmah (1996), Mitch Ellerman (2009), Amar Kang (2006) and the only other two time winner Morro Paez (1999 and 2001). Additionally, “The Lion” took out 2012 US Mosconi Cup team member Rodney Morris and “Mad Max” Eberle who himself has finished in the top three of the Swanee field 3 years (2005, 2011, and 2012). It was Eberle who initially knocked Pagulayan to the one loss side in the seventh round of the winner’s bracket. “The Lion” heaped revenge upon Eberle in the semi-finals sending “Mad Max” to the bleachers late Sunday night 7-2.
After two days and 16 rounds the 192 field was now down to two players. In the middle of the night surrounded by a room full of dedicated spectators, the single race to 11 finals was between Oscar “The Big O” Dominguez and Pagulayan. Dominguez’s road to the hot seat included the take down of Nick Spano, Corey Harper, Jim Hennessy, Brendan Crockett, Santos Sambajon Jr., Rodney Morris and Max Eberle.
In what can only be described as one of the most unique finals of any tournament, Pagulayan’s repeat win almost did not take place. “The Lion” dominated the match early and jumped to a quick 10-3 lead. Then in game 14 “The Lion” pocketed a tough but makeable back cut shot on the 9-ball for the match win. However, in a split second it was evident the cue ball would also drop giving Dominguez the game instead of Pagulayan the win.
The diminutive Pagulayan leaped in the air just as whitey wailed into a corner pocket. To add injury to insult when Pagulayan landed from his leap he sprained his calf and faced the rest of the match limping and having to adjust his stance to avoid further pain. Dominguez capitalized on the situation. Using strategic safety play “O” patiently took the score from 10-4 to 10-9. During those 5 games Pagulayan did have another opportunity to seal the deal but in a case of déjà-vu again scratched on a pocketed 9-ball. The cue ball caught the tip of one pocket and ricochet the ball into another pocket. In this situation it is hard not to think of that famous quote “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it?” from The Color of Money.
The winning game came down to a moment of luck or redemption depending on the perspective. Dominguez again executed a strong safe leaving Pagulayan in the unenviable position of having to kick at the 1-ball for legal contact. Using sonic speed, Pagulayan sent the cue ball off a long rail, hit the one, then the rock careened off the opposite long rail into the pack of balls that housed the 9. The match money ball then gently rolled into a side pocket. This time whitey stayed securely on the table and “The Lion” was able to roar two years in a row.

CSI Supports BCA as Governing Body of Cue Sports in North America
As a long time member of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), CSI supports the BCA in their recently announced pro pool initiative to provide funds to send North American players to international events. CSI is one of the first industry leaders to support the BCA initiative as a “2012 Official Contributor to International Competition.”
A solid framework for both North American and world professional pool has long existed, with the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) as the world body, and the BCA as the WPA member for North America. CSI commends the BCA on their commitment renewal as the “Governing Body for Cue Sports in North America.” CSI supports the BCA as the governing body, its pro points program, and the player selection process for international events.
With a decline in US player participation in world events, the time has come to change the structure of how pro pool in North America is supported. This is a great step in building that structure which will allow the top US and Canadian players to continue to compete and represent their countries internationally.
CSI, which produces the “US Open 10-Ball Championship,” one of the BCA pro point events, believes the future and strength of the sport lies in creating a synergy between the industry, the amateurs, the professionals, and the general public. Two years ago CSI launched the USA Pool League with that goal in mind, and a portion of CSI’s proceeds from the USAPL is pledged to promote and fund pro awareness.
We at CSI encourage industry support of the BCA in their new endeavor. In the past, CSI partnered with five other industry leaders to help support and fund the BCA Hall of Fame. It is time for all organizations that have the sport and industry foremost in mind to band together in support of the BCA.

The Evolution of a National Championship: BCAPL Moves to Rio in 2013
Since purchasing the BCA Pool League (BCAPL) in 2004 Mark Griffin and his team at CueSports International (CSI) have diligently pursued more choices for all players. Continuing that pursuit, CSI announces two major changes are set to take place with the BCAPL National Championships. In 2013 the event will be moving from May to July and relocating to the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino. The date and venue changes will allow more players, their family and friends to enjoy an even richer experience while at the “Greatest Pool Tournament in the World”.
Unfortunately the event has outgrown the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The 2012 (36th) BCAPL National Championships, scheduled May 9-20, 2012, will be the last year the event will be held at the Riviera. While CSI appreciates the Riviera and its’ staff for years of support, the relocation to the Rio in 2013 will give additional space to expand both the BCAPL Nationals amateur events and the CSI Professional tournaments.
The Rio is part of the Caesars Entertainment Corporation – the world’s largest casino entertainment group. With a state-of-the-art conference center which includes over 160,000 square feet of space, the atmosphere is elegant, modern and hi-tech. The convention center is outfitted with large projection screens and multiple wall mounted monitors throughout its hallways. In addition to the CSI CueSports Tournament System text notifications, the convention center monitors will be used to help players stay informed during the event.
The Rio is a 4 star all-suite hotel that offers extensive amenities and entertainment options. Providing spectacular views of Las Vegas, the hotel boasts over 2,500 suites. Every suite offers more than 600 square feet of spacious luxury. For those who wish or need to bring the family pet, the Rio is highly pet friendly with its unique program called PetStay.
To satisfy guests’ pallets, when it comes to dining the Rio is unparalleled. According to USA Today Travel 2011 report the Rio’s Carnival World Buffet and the famous 5 star Village Seafood Buffet are ranked #2 and #3 in the top 5 buffets in Las Vegas. Additionally, the Rio offers 12 more dining options from the casual to the opulent.
Gaming at the Rio is world-class. Known as the long time home of the World Series of Poker, the facility has more than 100,000 square feet of gaming space with 1,200 slot and video poker machines and over 80 table games.
When it is time to relax, the Rio Spa and Salon offers a full range of services to help you look and feel your best. What better way to chill in the summer after running a few racks then spending time at the unique Rio pool area. VooDoo Beach features real sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, four swimming pools and five Jacuzzi-style spas. Admission is complementary for all Rio guests and poolside cabanas, daybeds and waterside massages are available. For the golfers out there, Caesars Entertainment guests enjoy preferred access to the Rio Secca and Casacata Golf Courses. Casacata is ranked one of the top 100 modern courses in America by Golf Week Magazine.
In addition to being a full resort and casino, the Rio also has an extensive shopping area offering such stores as Harley Davidson, Michael Godard Art Gallery and Store, and 16 other specialty shops featuring clothing, accessories and fine gifts. To top off the evening, head to the VooDoo Rooftop Nightclub, an indoor/outdoor double-decker club known for one of the best views of Las Vegas.
In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately Seven Million Dollars to players. A video announcement of the move to the Rio in 2013, produced by The Action Report (TAR) can be viewed on the three CSI websites; www.playcsipool.com, www.playbca.com and www.playusapool.com. Bigger and Better at 2nd BCAPL Southwest Regional Championship
(Click to view photos from event)
Four hundred entries from 11 states competed September 1-4 at the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona in the BCAPL Southwest Regional Championships. With an $18,550 prize fund, the event was played on Diamond 7’ Smart Tables provided by Bad Boy’s Billiard Productions and produced by CueSports International, the parent company of the BCA Pool League.
The tournament had seven divisions: Scotch Doubles, Women’s Open Singles, Men’s Advanced / Master Singles, Men’s Open Singles, Men’s / Mixed Open Teams and Women’s Open Teams. While the event is open to all BCA Pool League and USA Pool League members, a special Arizona rating 6 and Under Singles division was also included.
Starting Thursday, 32 teams played in the single elimination Scotch Doubles event. Arizona husband and wife team, Mike and Susan Williams took home $500 for first place. Thursday evening was a special BCAPL swimming pool party in celebration of Labor Day Weekend. Players relaxed pool side with their friends, family and team mates under the warm Arizona summer night.
Friday morning the four singles divisions revved up. The Men’s Open Singles (which also included any women master level players) had 71 entrants. In the finals were Benjamin Sutherland from Phoenix and Shaun Murphy from Ramona, California. Sutherland was the hot seat recipient after winning 7 consecutive matches including three hill-hill. However, Sutherland could not take out Murphy. After initially being tossed into the one loss side by North Dakotan Brian Erickson, Murphy rallied back winning 6 more matches before double dipped Sutherland 5-1 and 5-3.
The Men’s Advanced / Master Singles division had 10 players including top area players such as: Tres “Big Daddy” Kane, Carlos Avalos, Nick DeLeon and Pete Lhotka. A force on the AZ Desert Classic Tour, Lhotka defeated John Smith 6-5, Kane 6-2, Jeff Hagen 6-3 and Provencio in the finals 6-3 to take home the tidy sum of $500 for his 4 match win.
This year the Women’s Open Singles field (which included Women Advanced players spotting a game) grew 38% from 23 players in 2010 to 37 this year. Sara “Millie” Miller, ranked 3rd on the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour (AWBT), cruised into the hot seat taking out Nancy Kennedy 5-0, Lori Kinny 5-2, Bianca Lindahl 5-2, Vilene Stutesman 5-2 and Sue Orr 5-2. Eager for a rematch, Orr dominated Miller in the finals from the beginning, winning set one 4-2, then shutout Miller in set two 4-0 and walked with $600 for the win.
Growing in popularity, the AZ 6 and Under Singles division fielded 66 entrants, up 47 players from 2010. The players in this handicapped division were for BCAPL Arizona players who had an AZ state rating 4 to 6. Sitting in the hot seat was Miguel Diaz (AZ 6) from Casa Grande, AZ. Diaz faced Joshua Welch from Yuma, in the finals. Diaz punted Welch to the one loss side during the hot seat match. Eager for revenge, Welch came back tougher than ever double dipping Diaz in the final 6-2, 6-1 to walk with the $700 first place prize.
Teams took center stage Saturday September 3rd. The team competitions were handicapped based on the national BCAPL rating of the fielded team members. Open players were valued at 2 points, Advanced players 3 points, Master players 4 points and Grand Master 5 points. Each team fielded a 4 player roster. The player rating points were added together with a minimum 8 and maximum 12 games to win based on the team members’ individual BCAPL national rating.
The Men’s / Mixed Open Team division fielded 23 (4 player) teams. Led by top AZ player Mitch Ellerman with team mates Chad Barber, JR Burkhart and Jerry Stuckart, Stinger’s Venom double dipped Knobby Bull Dawgs who was comprised of Burt Balancad, Pat Dicker, Larry Eans, Jose Gonzalez and Chris Shenker all from Arizona.
The Women’s Open Team division had 10 teams vying for the $700 first place payday. Going into Sunday the team sitting in the hot seat was Arizona’s Q & Brew Q-Tease comprised of Leandrea Gaff, Tami Hathcock, Cathy Hamilton-Kelley and Veronica Poore. The team handily took out all in their path including long time veteran team Badd Azz Babes who they later would face in the finals. The Babes included Kitty Carroll, Sonia Flores, Sara “Millie” Miller, Sophia Morquecho and Susan Williams. In this case experience won out with the Babes bearing down and double dipping the Q-Tease for 1st place.

BCAPL Rules Now Available on Kindle and Nook Formats
The Official Rules of the BCA Pool League is widely used within the BCAPL and by non BCAPL players all over the world.
Earlier this year CueSports International (CSI) launched the Spanish language version of the Official BCAPL Rules and now you can download both the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League (English version) and the Reglas Officiales de la BCA Liga Pool (Spanish version) on your Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble Nook. Kindle users can purchase both language versions online at www.amazon.com via the Kindle Store. Nook users can purchase both versions at www.bn.com. The price is $3.00.
When the first edition of the BCAPL rule book was published in 2007, well regarded cue sport historian and journalist Mike Shamos reviewed the book in the July 2008 issue of Billiards Digest. He said, “The (BCAPL) rules themselves and their interpretations have been given a great deal of thought, and the reasoning behind them is not hidden but is right there on the page. They’re also based on a great deal of experience with problems that surfaced in actual league situations. They don’t make the mistake of sacrificing the integrity of the game just to keep down the number of disputes that arise, which is a flaw endemic to league rules generally. I have the feeling that because of their logic the BCAPL rules just may become the dominant rules of the game.”
The Kindle and Nook launch of the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League is another step by the team at CSI to increase the use of technology in the pool community. In addition to this recent launch, CSI also created and launched the most progressive online tournament tracking and registration system in the sport, the CueSports Tournament System (CTS). The BCA Pool League Player Rating Categories
It is less than 6 months before thousands of pool players from around the world compete in the 35th Annual BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas (May 11-22, 2011), widely recognized as “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!”
In the summer of 2010, the BCA Pool League expanded and publicized their player rating categories to include Open, Advanced, Master and Grand Master levels. For the player’s convenience, a page is posted on the BCAPL website where all Advanced, Master and Grand Master players are listed. To view the lists visit:
http://playbca.com/Leagues/AdvancedandMasterList.aspx.
1. First select Men, Women or both.
2. Next select Masters, Grand Masters, Advanced or any combination.
3. Then click Go
Additionally, at the bottom of each list is a copy of the BCAPL rating criteria.
The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of players’ skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.
The Advanced Division was created to add a level of play that falls between the Open Division and the Masters Division. Most of the players who have been moved into the Advanced Division were moved from the Masters Division down to the Advanced. The goal is to allow more players to participate and to further competitive opportunity.
CSI also reclassified all active Player Members to be included in the other singles divisions (based on their individual ability).
The following new Advancement Criteria became effective June 1, 2010 and is retroactive to all players who have cashed in the singles divisions of the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships since 2005.
¬New Advancement Criteria Old Policy New Policy
Top 8 from Men’s Open Singles Master Master
Top 4 from Women’s Open Singles Master Master
9th-48th from Men’s Open Singles Master Advanced
5th-12th from Women’s Open Singles Master Advanced
Top 8 from Men’s Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 2 from Women’s Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 6 from Men’s Senior Singles Master Advanced
Top 3 from Women’s Senior Singles Master Advanced
Team Masters:
Going into 2011, all Team Masters are now on the Advanced or Open player lists based on singles performance and known ability. The Team Master category is based on an individual’s participation on a team’s finish at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.
State Masters:
Players who are currently listed in their state as a Master player (but who have not participated in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships) may remain as a Master or be moved down to the Advanced Division based on known ability and state and regional tournament results from 2005 – 2010.
Player Members:
All new Player Members, beginning June 1, 2010 will be required to enter the Advanced or higher Singles Divisions, ranked based on known ability. New and established Player Members (who have not cashed) may request consideration to enter the Open Division, but will be assessed individually.
Players on the Advanced list may petition the BCAPL to be removed. The Advanced category is based on individual play. If we have a tournament history of that player in singles that indicates that they are not an Advanced level player, they may be removed from the list and put back into the Open division.
Petition Procedure
To petition the BCA Pool League in order to be removed from the Advanced, Master, Grand Master or Team Master list, email Bill Stock at bill@playcsipool.com or mail the request. Telephone requests will not be accepted. All requests must be in writing.

CSI Now Accepts Online Registration for Independent Events
CueSports International (CSI) announces players are now able to register online for all upcoming independent events via the CueSports Tournament System (CTS) website (www.ctsondemand.com). The online registration section of CTS went live Friday, January 7th.
Online registration is now available for the following events:
• The 15th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament
• The 18th U.S. Bar Table Championships
Players who register must pay their online entries by credit card using a Visa or Mastercard. All players will be sent an auto-generated email confirmation for each event they register for.
The Jay Swanson Memorial is going into its 15th year. The $3000 guaranteed / $4000 with a full field added event is scheduled February 12-13, 2011. The tournament will be held for the first time at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. The event will also be live streamed via The Action Report (TAR). In the previous two years the 192 player field filled with a small wait list.
One of the largest and most revered bar table events, The U.S. Bar Table Championships, with $25,250 added, is held every year at the Terrible’s Sands Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada. Scheduled February 21-27th, the tournament has the following divisions: Men’s /Open 8-ball, 9-ball, and 10-ball and Women’s 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball. Players who compete in all three of either the men’s / open or women’s divisions are eligible for “All Around” bonuses. While there is no field limit, in 2010 slightly over 500 players traveled to Reno to compete. This event is also known for the extremely low room block rates at the host hotel.
Additional events will be added to the CTS online registration page soon. Starting the end of January online registration will be available for all divisions of the BCAPL National 8-Ball and BCAPL National 9-Ball Championships (May 11-22, 2011, Riviera Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas).
However, in addition to registering online, players still have the option to either mail or fax their entries for all CSI tournaments and events. Only one form of registration should be used in order to avoid duplication.
CSI launched its custom designed CueSports Tournament System (CTS) in 2010. The CTS has a highly robust online bracket system which allows for both individual player and team searches, cross event archives, and offers detailed information about matches, such as table assignments, times, history of a player’s event matches, results and payouts just to name a few. Additionally, the CTS site has the added functionality of tournament live scoring, which CSI rolled out in the 2010 U.S. Open 10-Ball event. Now going into 2011, the online registration function has been added making the CTS site revolutionary in the industry for its cross function capabilities.
To register online for the 15th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament or the 18th U.S. Bar Table Championships go to: www.ctsondemand.com. For more information about these and all CSI and / or the BCAPL upcoming events visit: www.playcsipool.com and www.playbca.com.

“The Pearl” Heads to UAE for 2011 World 8-Ball Championship
After a 3 year hiatus from the world pool stage, legend Earl “the Pearl” Strickland is back and in prime form. “The Pearl” will once again be representing the United States in the World 8-Ball Championships February 19-26, 2011 in the United Arab Emirates.
Sponsored by Mike Gulyassy Custom Cues, Ice Breakers Billiards, and CueSports International (CSI), Strickland received his well earned invite to the world 8-Ball event due to his stellar comeback throughout the past year. In 2010, he started the year winning the 8-Ball division of the U.S. Bar Table Championships and ended the year winning the Steve Mizerak Championship and tied for 7-8th in the Turning Stone Classic XVI.
Strickland ascended the U.S. ranks quickly in 2010 and is currently the 6th highest rated U.S. player. Buzz has already started about the possibility of Strickland once again being invited to play on the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team. If this occurs, it would mark Strickland’s 14th and unprecedented year playing in the popular and revered U.S. vs. Europe team event produced by UK firm Matchroom Sport.
While some argue that competitive pool is a young man’s sport, the 2006 Hall of Fame recipient, 5 time U.S. Open 9-Ball and the 6 time world champion is poised to prove that perception wrong. At 49 Strickland is playing better than ever and is more determined than ever to win. Also known for his natural athletic ability, “the Pearl” adheres to a regime that includes running approximately 8 miles a day. He is also known for his prowess on the golf course.
The world 8-Ball event conflicts with the 18th U.S. Bar Table Championships, which is produced by Strickland sponsor CSI. However, CSI fully supports “the Pearl” in his decision to play in Fujairah and wishes him the best in the World 8-Ball Championship. Qualifiers Scheduled for 12th U.S. Open One Pocket Championship
CueSports International (CSI) is producing the 12th U.S. Open One Pocket Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV on May 13-15. The $10,000 added three day event will be held immediately prior to the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship and alongside the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.
The game of One Pocket is often compared to chess. To play well it requires a keen sense of both offensive and defensive strategy. To be the best, a player must have the precision of a diamond cutter with their cue ball control and the patience of a long distance runner.
It is anticipated that some of the best known talents in One Pocket will be participating in the event. With a limited 48 player field a list of former One Pocket champions were emailed invites in early January. Any declined or un-registered invite spots will convert to open spots after March 1st. In addition to the invite and open spots, four qualifiers have been scheduled.
One paid entry (valued at $340) is included in the payout of each qualifier. Should the winner of a qualifier not be able to accept their spot, it will be offered to the next person in line from that particular qualifier event.

Pagulayan Roars into 1st Place at Swanee
Hot on the heels of his stellar performance at this year’s Derby City Classic, Alex “the Lion” Pagulayan continued his winning streak by taking first place at the 15th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament.
The event was held at the legendary Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California February 12-13th under the tournament direction of Mark Griffin, Sunny Griffin and Bill Stock of CueSports International (CSI). With the move to the Hard Times location, the event was live streamed for the first time by the rock and roll high tech team from TAR (www.theactionreport.com).
The largest two day 9’ table event in the United States, the $4000 added tournament with 192 players on 28 tables is not for the faint of heart. It is a test of skill, concentration and stamina. The event celebrates the much loved Southern, CA player Jay Swanson, who passed away June 1996. He was known as “the Gentle Giant” who demonstrated all that the Swanee event still stands for today.
The Swanee event has a history of a full field. However with CSI’s recently launched online registration function on its CueSports Tournament System (CTS) (www.ctsondemand.com), it was sold out for the first time the week before the tournament.
In addition to Pagulayan, the Swanee field was a literal who’s who of western U.S. players. Arizona monster Mitch Ellerman took second place. Ellerman won the event in 2009, then after a one year hiatus came back strong to narrowly lose in the finals 7-6 to Pagulayan.
Additional players included “Mad Max” Eberle. Eberle was shuttled to the loser’s side by Pagulayan in a nail biter quarter final match. With the score hill-hill Eberle dead hooked Pagulayan on the 5-Ball. It seemed Eberle pretty much had the match in the bag, but you never can count “the Lion” out. Imparting a little right spin, Pagulayan one-rail kicked in the 5 getting perfect on the 6 and calling it game, set and match.
15th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament Results / Payout:
1st ($3,000) Alex Pagulayan
2nd ($1,500) Mitch Ellerman
3rd ($1,000) Max Eberle

CSI policy on qualifier participation: CSI recognized qualifiers are open to all players. Qualifier start times, added money, entry fees and races vary based on location. Only one spot will be awarded per qualifier. Players who submitted or submit an entry form and fee to either the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship and / or the U.S. Open One Pocket Championship may still play in CSI recognized qualifiers.
Any player who wins a qualifier spot after already submitting their entry form(s) and fee(s) will be reimbursed for the entry fee previously submitted and allowed to accept the paid qualifier spot. All qualifier winners must be verified by CSI with the qualifier host room and / or tournament director.
All U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship and U.S. Open One Pocket Championship entrants, including qualifier winners, must complete and sign the required entry form. A player, including any qualifier winners, will not be considered fully entered into either the U.S. Open 10-Ball or U.S. Open One Pocket national events until CSI receives the player’s entry form and fee.
Qualifier winner entry fees are to be submitted by the qualifier host location directly and not paid out in cash to the qualifier winner (value $340 for the U.S. Open One Pocket and $550 for the U.S. Open 10-Ball). Kiamco and Villarreal Take 18th U.S. Bar Table Championships All Around Titles
Come snow or shine the U.S. Bar Table Championships (USBTC) held February 21-27, 2011 brings players from all across the globe to “the Biggest Little City in the World.” Hosted at the Terrible’s Sands Regency Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada, the $25,250 guaranteed added event celebrated its 18th anniversary in 2011.
The event had over 450 entries in six divisions: Men’s / Mixed 10-Ball, 9-Ball, 8-Ball and Women’s 10-Ball, 9-Ball and 8-Ball. This was the first year in the event’s history to include a full set of women’s divisions and women’s All Around bonuses.
The USBTC is produced by CueSports International (CSI), sponsored by Terrible’s Sands Regency and Diamond Billiard Products, and directed by Bad Boys Billiard Productions. During the event players were paid immediately on-site. Over $66,000 was available for cash payouts.
The tournament began with the 10-Ball divisions, with 16 women and 93 men. The 9-Ball division started its engine mid-week with 23 women and 128 men. The 8-Ball competition, with 36 women and 157 men in contention, wrapped up the event. After two years of bandwidth issues at the host venue, the innovative team and internet live pool action leaders, TAR, this year was able to live stream.
In the women’s competition, a tornado ripped through all three fields with little mercy. Vivian Villarreal, long time WPBA professional and fan favorite, took first place in all three women’s divisions. Her dominance solidly secured her the $500 first place All Around Women’s Bonus.
Competing for the second place women’s All Around included Melissa “The Viper” Little, Nicole Keeney, Brittany Bryant, and Susan Williams. While the points were close, it was Bryant who came in second in the women’s All Around points behind Villarreal.
For the first time in several years, the Men’s / Mixed All Around competition was not dominated by one or two individuals. Instead there were a handful of players who were neck and neck in All Around points throughout the week.
The final board of the Men’s / Mixed 10-Ball division included the diverse crowd of Stevie “the Blade” Moore from Georgia, Canadian Pros Stan Tourangeau and John Morra, Californian Louis Ulrich, Arizona monster Mitch Ellerman, Midwest young gun Branden Ashcroft and 2008 World Pool Master Champion Alex “the Lion” Pagulayan.
Going into the 10-Ball finals between Pagulayan and Morra, the railbirds were putting “The Lion” heavily in favor over Morra. The live stream audience was treated to both men playing dead stroke in the first race to 7. However, two scratches on the break by Pagulayan gave Morra the edge needed to win the first set. Coming from the one loss side, Morra would need to beat Pagulayan again in a second set. It was not to be as Pagulayan came back strong and Morra seemed to lose steam, giving Pagulayan an easy win in set two.
Heading into mid-week Pagulayan led the men’s All Around points with Morra hot on his heels. However in the 9-Ball division both were knocked out much earlier than anticipated. “The Lion” was ousted by Vegas player Ray Skenandore and the kid from Ontario, Morra, was sent to the sidelines by Phoenix player Nick DeLeon. Both Pagulayan and Morra finished 49th-64th place in the division. The gate was now wide open to a slew of other players to pursue the meaty $2,000 first place Men’s / Mixed All Around bonus.
Prime to take advantage of that opening were Moore, Tourangeau and lesser known Tennessee player Josh O’Neal who all cashed high in the 10-Ball division and two additional dangers, Larry “the Truth” Nevel and top Philippine player Warren Kiamco. The finals of the 9-Ball men’s division were those very two dangers who uncharacteristically didn’t catch the final board earlier in 10-Ball, but earned redemption in the 9-Ball.
Nevel’s road to the 9-Ball finals was a long one. After a first loss to Beau Runningen in his third match, Nevel had to grind it through 9 more matches on the one loss side to make it to the mountain. Kiamco was more leisurely in his travel to the finals, enjoying the sweetness of being in the hot seat. The finals came down to Nevel and Kiamco. But even the best grinders can hit a wall. Although Nevel trounced Kiamco 9-2 in the first set, a little déjà-vu of the Pagulayan – Morra 10-Ball final took place. In set two Nevel lost a little steam and Kiamco played solid taking the set 9-6 and first place in the division. Now it appeared there was a new Sherriff in the All Around point list town.
Going into the 8-Ball and final division, there were more horses in serious contention for the USBTC All Around bonuses than the 9th race at Aqueduct.
The top contenders were Kiamco, Nevel, Moore, Pagulayan, Morra, Ashcraft, O’Neal and Tourangeau.
Moore played consistently all week placing 7-8th in the 10-Ball and 5-6th in the 9-Ball. Tourangeau was also one to watch with a 5-6th place finish in the 10-Ball and 7-8th place in the 9-Ball. Although they faltered in the 9-Ball, the 1st and 2nd place finishes in the 10-Ball still put Pagulayan and Morra in solid All Around position. Nevel and Kiamco garnered new life after their 9-Ball finishes and were slightly ahead of Pagulayan and Morra in the point list. Two darker horses but still in contention were Ashcraft with a 5-6th place finish in the 10-Ball and a 17-24th place in the 9-Ball and O’Neal with a solid 9-12th place finish in the 10-Ball and strong 5-6th finish in the 9-Ball.
The top contenders still had to maneuver the 157 player 8-Ball field. Some fared well, some fell to the wayside. The final 8 players included: Amar Kang, O’Neal, Kiamco and Ashcraft on the winner’s side and Morra, Moore, Josh Smith and Ivan Doty on the one loss side. Kang, Smith and Doty could only cash in on the All Around bonuses if they won the 8-Ball division.
Kang, Smith and Doty were motivated and potential spoilers to the other 5 players; evidenced when Doty knocked Moore out of the 8-Ball division 5-0. After the dust settled Morra and Kiamco were the last two players standing. While Kiamco again was the hot seat man, Morra meticulously made his way through 10 matches before facing Kiamco. It must have been the taste of his near 10-Ball victory that spurred Morra as he handily double dipped Kiamco 5-2, 5-2 to take the 8-Ball division title.
With division play over and points list in hand, it was announced that Kiamco took the $2,000 first place Men’s / Mixed All Around bonus, Morra took the $1,000 second place bonus and the initial lion that roared early in the week, Pagulayan, squeaked past the rest of the field to take the $500 third place bonus.

Online Registration Launched for BCAPL National Championship Entries
BCA Pool League members may now enter online for all divisions of the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and the 8th BCAPL National 9-Ball Championships being held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, May 11-22, 2011. The online registration is a new functionality of the CueSports Tournament System (CTS) at www.ctsondemand.com.
CueSports International launched the custom designed state of the art CTS in 2010. CTS has a highly robust online bracket system which allows for individual player and team searches, cross event archives, and detailed information about matches – such as table assignments, match times, history of a player’s event matches, results and payouts just to name a few. The CTS site has the added functionality of tournament live scoring for selected events, which CSI introduced with the 2010 U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship. With the new online registration function and the popular text and email notifications of match times and table assignments, the CTS site is revolutionary in the industry for its cross function capabilities.
Players who register online must pay their entries via either Visa or MasterCard. All users of the CTS online registration section must first “Create an Account.” When creating a CTS account the following applies:
• The account holder must be a player participating in the event
• A valid email address is required for creating an account (due to issues with Comcast and RR email agents, we cannot accept Comcast or RR email addresses. For more information about the issue visit http://playbca.com/News/ToComcastEmailUsers.aspx)
• Only one email address may be used per account / person
• Once you create your new CTS online registration account a confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided. After the account is created, each subsequent time a player enters online registration area, they may do so just using their login ID and Password
Only one form of registration (either online, fax or mail) should be used in order to avoid duplication.
Additionally, all entrants may also sign up for free (this year) texting or email announcements of match times, table assignments, and results. CTS texting is very cool - all players should give it a try. It will even tell you when the preceding match concludes on your assigned table, so you will know immediately when your table is ready.
To register online go to: www.ctsondemand.com. For more information about the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and BCAPL National 9-Ball Championships, and to reserve your room at the Riviera Hotel & Casino visit www.playbca.com.
This year the Riviera reduced their room rates and the registration numbers have been tremendous. For anyone booking 8 or more nights, the rate is $60 per night (restrictions apply). For reservations less than 8 nights the rate is $80. These rates include Friday and Saturday evenings; allow up to 4 people per room and no resort fee will be added. To make your reservation call (800) 634-6753 and use group code BCAPCPP.

“Reglas Oficiales de la BCAPL” Now Available
Mike Shamos, the Curator of The Billiard Archive, wrote an article in the July 2008 issue of Billiards Digest called “Who Makes the Rules?” Shamos assessed the newly released (2007) “Official Rules of the BCA Pool League.” In his article Shamos said, “I have the feeling that because of their logic the BCAPL rules just may become the dominant rules of the game.”
Since that time, the “Official Rules of the BCA Pool League” has been updated annually and is used worldwide both by both league and non-league players. Until recently the book was only available in English.
However, after 2,000+ man hours and 33,000 words translated, CueSports International (CSI) has released a Spanish version of the “Official Rules of the BCA Pool League” now available in read-only PDF format on the BCAPL website. To view the “2010-2011 Reglas Oficiales de la BCAPL” go to www.playbca.com, click on the Leagues, then Rules tabs.
A two year collaboration between CSI Director of Rules and Referees, Bill Stock with Ed Smith, Manoli Smith, Willy Fishbach, Javi Belen, and Jose Antonio Martinez Ramos created a well thought out and comprehensive translation.
Expanding on the recent release of the Spanish version of the “Official Rules of the BCA Pool League”, CSI is in process of making all translations available in the near future for smart and electronic devices.

Heading into its 19th year the U.S. Bar Table Championships (USBTC), produced by CueSports International (CSI), will soon have a new yet familiar home. The USBTC will still be held in Reno, NV, however the growing and popular weeklong event will be moving to the stunning Grand Sierra Resort and Casino starting February 12-19, 2012. Reyes Crowned U.S. Open One Pocket Champion
“The Magician” Efren Reyes went undefeated through the full 64-player field to become the 2011 (12th) U.S. Open One Pocket Champion at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Produced by CueSports International, the $10,000 added event drew the finest one pocket players from around the world as well a sophisticated room full of spectators. Reyes defeated poker star Chris Gentile in the single set finals 5-2. This was Gentile’s first U.S. Open One Pocket and his most successful finish in a major one pocket event.
Gentile had an impressive showing, besting Mike Davis 4-1 and Rafael Martinez 4-3. To enter the semi-finals, Gentile narrowly avoided a loss to “The Pearl” Earl Strickland when he came back from being down 3-0 to win 4-3. In the a-side finals, Gentile’s run was halted by Reyes. Reyes took a quick lead 3-1 after an unfortunate scratch by Gentile. After an aggressive cut shot on the 3 ball, Reyes gave up game five but had the break up 3-2. Gentile chipped away at the stack and responded to Reyes’s moves but in the end, the magician worked his magic and closed out the set.
Alex Pagulayan had a rough start, losing 4-0 to Jeremy Jones, only pocketing two balls the entire set. “I’m just not feeling it. I better figure it out,” he said after the match. Pagulayan went on to win nine straight matches on the b-side before meeting up with Gentile in the semi-finals early Sunday night. The players exchanged moves and put on a clinic for the fans but Gentile would advance to meet Reyes in the finals.
With a game like one pocket, predicting match times and schedules can be tricky. This event ran smoothly under the direction of Bill Stock, Ken Schuman, and John Leyman. With the U.S. Open One Pocket now concluded the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship swings into gear starting Monday, May 16th with the player’s meeting at 4 pm and two rounds scheduled at 6 pm and 8:30 pm.

The remaining singles and scotch doubles divisions will be completed today, Tuesday, May 17th.

A full field of 96 players from the U.S, England, Spain, China, Canada, Japan and the Philippines are in the $25,000 Added 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. However most of the first round matches started Tuesday, May 17 and what a group of first round matches it has been.
In the first set of matches at 6 pm Monday, Marc Vidal (#33 BCA ranked player) nearly shut out Rodney “The Rocket” Morris (#7 BCA ranked player) with a score of 8-2 on the TAR live stream table. It was 7-0 before Morris clocked a win. While ahead 7-1, Vidal played a lock up safety that incidentally kicked the 9 ball in from the middle of the table. Though Vidal was able to kick in the 7 ball, he was left with a difficult 8, allowing Morris to get another game.
In the following match, “Hennessey” Jonathan Pinegar (#41 BCA ranked player) displayed a similar performance against another U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion, Gabe Owen (#17 BCA ranked player). Owen struggled throughout the match with the table speed and looked incredibly frustrated. Pinegar capitalized and at 7-1, after kicking and missing the 1 ball, Owen conceded the match.
Tuesday’s matches has also seen 2010 Women’s World 9-Ball Champion, Xiaofang Fu narrowly lose to Mitch Ellerman from Arizona (8-5). Introducing 2011 BCAPL Singles and Scotch Doubles Champions!
Tuesday, May 17th at the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas was all about the semis and finals in both the singles and scotch doubles divisions. The best of the best in each division focused to keep their stroke mechanics and nerves in place as hundreds of spectators watched who would take the top spots in each event.
Runaway Matches
From the 381 ladies, Jennifer Kraber of Austin, Texas (league 621) went undefeated to become the 2011 BCAPL Women’s Open Champion. Her lopsided finals match against Josie Leroy of Newberg, Oregon (league 154 & 432) ended in a score of 4-0. Over the three days of singles play, Kraber only gave up eight games in her ten matches. Kraber, a regular top finisher on the OB Cues regional tour, also had a 7th place finish in the masters scotch doubles with long-time partner James Davis, Sr. of Manor, Texas.
In the BCAPL Men’s Masters finals, Harvey Shognosh of Forrest, Ontario, Canada (league 601) also went undefeated through the 45 player field of top notch players to best Gustavo Correa of Houston, Texas (league 191 & 1073) with a final score of 7-4. Both players delivered strong performances in a near flawless finals match for spectators.
Scotch Doubles Madness
It was an all Arizona BCAPL Open Scotch Doubles finale. Of the 338 entries, the Mesa team of Jesse Renteria (league 293 & 526) and Bernie Store (league 293) went undefeated to beat the team of Chris Paradowski and Lois Schmitt from Tucson (both league 24). It was Store and Renteria’s first tournament playing together. “I’ve known this guy for 12 years and never played a game of scotch together,” said Store.
Of the 71 BCAPL Masters Scotch Doubles teams, John Maikke and Dana Aft from Atlanta, Georgia (both league 875) came through the b-side to defeat the Wisconsin team of Robert Hovick (league 348) and Kelly Birmingham (league 807) in a two-set finals score of 5-1, 4-3. It was run-out scotch doubles pool at its finest. Every game in both sets was finished in one inning or less.
Double-Dippers
In the 112 player BCAPL Women’s Senior division, Shawn Modelo from Antioch, California (league 322) came through to redeem herself in the finals. After losing the driver seat match to Lois Schmitt of Tucson, Arizona, Modelo was came back with a vengeance. She took the first set handily, 4-0. Schmitt would put up a bigger fight in the second set. When the match was hill-hill, Modelo hooked herself on the 8-ball and nearly kicked it in. Schmitt missed her opening shot and left a shot and the win for Modelo.
Meanwhile one table over, 18-year-old Danny Olson from Brookings, South Dakota (league 953) was grinding it out. After losing his first match of the new BCAPL Men’s Advanced division, he came through the 100-player field to double-dip local Las Vegas favorite Chris C. Akey (league 769) 6-2, 6-2. Olson won the men’s players member division in 2010.
Of the 283 entries in the popular BCAPL Men’s Senior division, Bill Skinner of Aurora, Colorado (league 671) double rolled through the finals match against Bill McCoy (league 187) from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 5-1, 5-1. After losing 5-3 to McCoy earlier in the tournament, Skinner was on a mission and the mission was accomplished.
Hill-Hill Mania
Veteran 8-ball player Jolene Herum from River Falls, Wisconsin (league 234 & 996) cruised undefeated through the 39-player BCAPL Women’s Advanced division. Meanwhile Tacoma, Washington’s Cindy Sliva (league 154) lost her first match and came back through 10 rounds including a tough hill-hill match with Junior National Champion Liz Lovely to meet Herum in the finals. Sliva was ahead 4-3 but was unable to capitalize. At hill-hill, Herum broke and ran to close out the set 5-4.
In the BCAPL Women’s Master finals, it was a case of different division déjà vu. Of the 27 entries, Amanda Lampert from Frisco, Texas (league 1034) lost her first match 7-5 to Arizona’s Susan Williams (league 293 & 1094), only to fight her way to the finals against Canadian Jana Montour (league 497). At hill-hill, Montour broke and ran to take the set and the title. Final score was 7-6.
Robert Green from Bellaire, Texas (league 151 & 406) went undefeated to best Bill Dunsmore of Lutz, Florida in the finals of the men’s super seniors (age 65+). At hill-hill, Dunsmore ran down to his key ball and was left with a tricky bank which he missed. Green methodically ran off his balls to claim the match 5-4 and the super seniors title.
In a hill-hill spectacular BCAPL Men’s Open finale of the evening, Mike Alonzo from Pasadena, Texas (league 502, 1073 & 152) defeated 16-year-old phenom Chris Byers from Tualatin, Oregon (league 432). From a field of 1,328 players, the two competitors drew a packed house of spectators. The teenager is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Byer has a recent runner-up finish in the Western BCA Championships. In a race to five, Byers lost hill-hill to Alonzo earlier in the tournament but took the first set of the finals 5-4. In the second set, Alonzo miscued at 2-1, allowing Byers to tie up the score. The players exchanged runouts until it was hill-hill when an unfortunate scratch by Byers allowed Alonzo a chance at the table. He flew out of his seat at the opportunity to run off each ball for the championship.
Wednesday, May 18th is the start of the 8-Ball team competitions with 6 divisions and a total of 904 teams playing in the “Greatest Pool Tournament in the World.” Additionally, day three of the 3rd (2011) U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship, also produced and ran by CueSports International (CSI), gets underway Wednesday morning with 96 of the best players from 8 countries vying for a piece of the $73,000 prize fund.

U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship Heats up Further in Day 3
With a field this fierce at the 3rd U.S Open 10-Ball Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the left side of the bracket looks as scary as the right side. Dennis Hatch was sent West by Efren Reyes in round two. Hatch missed a 10-ball to move ahead 3-0. Reyes clawed back into the match and at 4-4; Hatch missed a makeable shot on the 3-ball and never won a game after that.
Two-time U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion Mika Immonen was defeated 8-4 by recent Ultimate 10-Ball Champion and current U.S. BCA point leader, Mike Dechaine. Alex Pagulayan crushed fellow Filipino Jose Parica 8-3, only to come up short against Raj Hundal in the third round, 8-4. “Giant Killer” Jeremy Sossei escaped an 8-7 nail biter against Mitch Ellerman and rolled through Shaun Wilkie, 8-2.
In the evening feature TAR match between Earl Strickland and Brandon Shuff, Strickland appeared to be struggling. Shuff capitalized on Strickland’s errors and did not allow his antics to faze him. Shuff took the set 8-5 with a strong performance. Next up for Shuff will be a showdown with “The South Dakota Kid” Shane Van Boening. Reyes also escaped a close match in round three against Sal Butera. Reyes was down 6-4 when he worked some magic for the fans with a couple table runs and smart defensive play to come back and win 8-6. Reyes and Hundal are set to play next.
On the neighboring table, it was a Valley Forge finals rematch between Ralf Souquet and Rob Saez. Souquet dominated the match the entire time leaving Saez very few opportunities to get on the board. Souquet advances with his 8-3 win and will face Mike Davis next. Davis’s match against Hunter Lombardo was the last to finish for the evening, along with Paul Song and top player Kenichi Uchigaki from Japan. Both matches went hill-hill. Lombardo jumped in a tough 1 ball at hill-hill but missed a cross corner bank on the 2. Both players shot at the 4 ball but Davis would be the one to run the rack, taking the set 8-7. At hill-hill, nerves were high. Song hung a 6 ball in the corner that would cost him that match, 8-7. Uchigaki will play Corey Deuel next.

Dechaine is Story of Day 4 at the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship
Going into Friday morning at the 3rd Annual U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship the story on everyone’s lips was the outstanding performance by currently #1 U.S. ranked player “Fireball” Mike Dechaine. As the field gets smaller, the matches get tighter. Although moved to the one loss side earlier in the week by Kenichi Uchigaki, Dechaine has fired through the one loss side with a vengeance. After eliminating Earl Strickland during the 6 pm Thursday round, Dechaine then defeated “The Scorpion” Johnny Archer 8-0 in the 11 pm round, running seven consecutive racks to close out the set. Friday morning Dechaine then went on to defeat Jeremy Sossei 8-4 and Raj Hundal 8-5.
Arizona’s Mitch Ellerman is also sitting pretty after squeaking out a hill-hill win against Mike Davis. Ellerman broke and ran on the hill to advance. On the feature TAR table, “The Magician” Efren Reyes was struggling against Jonathan Pinegar. He found himself down 7-3. He claimed one more game to make it 7-4 and appeared to be coming back until he made the fatal error of bumping the 8 ball into a tricky position. He attempted to bank it in the side but left the shot and match for Pinegar. Reyes will now face Spain’s David Alcaide for a chance to stay alive.
“The Lion” Alex Pagulayan took an early exit settling for 13th- 16th place after losing to Darren Appleton. This was after Pagulayan defeated California’s Corey Harper after arriving late to his match and receiving a one game penalty, then being down 5-0 and 7-3. Appleton meets up with Germany’s Ralf Souquet next. Souquet had to forfeit his winner-side match against Corey Deuel due to a minor car accident earlier in the day.
On the right side of the bracket, Shane Van Boening and Scott Frost will face off in the hot seat match. Frost has played consistent all week knocking to the one-loss side: Darren Appleton (8-4), Tony Robles (8-5), David Alcaide (8-4) and Charlie Williams (8-5). Van Boening also had a near flawless record on his way to the hot seat match tossing Donny Mills (8-4), Danny Harriman (8-3), CJ Wiley (8-3), Brandon Shuff (8-0) and Dennis Haar (8-5).

Van Boening Victorious at U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship
The finals of the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship was between two highly decorated professionals from both sides of the Atlantic. After 6 days the field of 96 player, representing 10 countries, whittled down to U.S. favorite Shane Van Boening and Spain’s David Alcaide. Held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino and produced by CueSports International (CSI), in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Van Boening was crowned the 2011 champion winning 11-6.
Starting the day four players returned for day six of the event. The first match featured Spain’s David Alcaide versus relatively unknown player, Dennis Haar from Terre Haute, Indiana. This was Haar’s first professional 10-ball tournament and his best finish in any big event. Haar cleared a path to the final four by way of defeating top players James Baraks, Mitch Ellerman, Mike Dechaine, and Jonathan Pinegar. Unfortunately, his efforts fell short against Alcaide who jumped ahead at 6-5. Haar jumped and hung a 1-ball for Alcaide to get on the hill. At 7-5, Haar missed a 4-7 combination that would cost him the match.
In the winner side finals match between Van Boening and Corey Deuel, both players appeared to be “trading errors,” said TAR commentators. They exchanged racks until the score was 4-4 when Deuel hooked himself on the 7-ball. Deuel would win one more game to make it 5-4 before Van Boening took the next four, breaking and running on hill to win 8-5. Deuel and Alcaide would meet next for the semi-finals match, race to 9, win by two games.
In this match, Alcaide jumped to a quick 4-1 lead and appeared to be playing fast and loose. The gentlemen exchanged some defensive maneuvers over the next few racks until the score was tied 4-4. In an unbelievable turn of events, Deuel missed the 1-ball with ball in hand allowing Alcaide to take that game and the next one. Both players continued to struggle, exchanging racks until Alcaide took the set 9-6.
The final match was a race to 11, win by two games. Van Boening entered the finals undefeated. 2011 has been another banner year for Van Boening as he also recently ran over the competition at the Derby City Classic taking first in the One Pocket, second in 9-Ball and the Master of the Table honors in addition to taking 9th in the World 8-Ball Championship. Alcaide, long considered the top professional player in Spain, recently finished 3rd in the World 8-Ball Championship, 9th in the Beijing Open Men’s Division and was the first player from Spain to represent Team Europe in the Mosconi Cup. Alcaide came through the one loss side winning 7 matches in a row after a 3rd round loss to Scott Frost.
The nerves ran high into the finals between Van Boening and Alcaide. Alcaide took a quick 5-1 lead when a dry break would cost him two games. At 5-3, Van Boening returned the favor with a dry break but Alcaide was unable to capitalize. He missed a 6 ball that allowed Van Boening to close the gap and take the lead. In the middle section of the match, the spectators were treated to several safety battle games. However Van Boening prevailed and won seven games in a row to pull ahead 8-5 when Alcaide finally seized his opportunity with a tricky 6-10 combo billiard from the 3-ball. That would be the final game he would win. Van Boening turned it into high gear and kicked in the 4-ball at 10-6 followed by a safety on the 5-ball which led to ball in hand and the run out.
The 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship was sponsored by Mueller Recreational Products, McDermott Cues, Diamond Billiard Products, Simonis, Aramith, the Magic Rack, Billiards Digest and BreakRAK with direction by CSI Director of Rules and Referees Bill Stock with Ken Shuman from California and John Leyman from New York. The Action Report (TAR) live streamed the entire 6 days of the event with additional expert assistance by the team from Run Out Media.

USA Pool League Starts Up in Mile High City
The USA Pool League, a division of CueSports International (CSI), heads into its second year and is now available in Colorado. Mile high pool players will now have an opportunity to join the fun, new national league.
The USAPL is unlike any other national league in the United States. Player benefits include: no player membership fees, national “Fairplay” handicap system, paid local cash and prizes, and players have an opportunity to enter the national championships directly without having to qualify through local or regional events.
Additionally, USAPL members are offered a wide array of player discounts from some of the largest and most notable groups in the industry, including Mueller Recreational Products, McDermott Cues, Billiards Digest and Diamond Billiard Products.
The Denver area Rocky Mountain USAPL operations will be managed by the team of Samm (Diep) Vidal and pro player Marc Vidal. Also for the first time, through the Rocky Mountain USAPL, league members will have the opportunity to be dual-sanctioned. Rocky Mountain USAPL league members will be eligible to participate in both USAPL and BCA Pool League events including both national championships.
The USAPL raises the bar to a whole new level of fun competitiveness with over 70% of league matches going hill / hill. The league strongly appeals to both recreational and advanced players allowing all ranges of pool players to form teams and compete.
Setting the USAPL apart is that players on a team are not denied the opportunity to play together. Even as the abilities of players progress and handicaps fluctuate the “Fairplay” Handicap System allows for teams to stay together. The USAPL always encourages peak performance and does not penalize players and teams for playing their best pool.
“The USAPL offers the most fair and accurate handicapping system that I’ve ever played in. Marc and I are very excited to get this league going. We have big plans in store for the players, including more payouts and prizes, as well as regional events. This is exactly what Colorado pool needs!” said Diep, Rocky Mountain USAPL Manager.
John Casey, USAPL National League Liaison, added “Samm and Marc are ideal as USAPL Managers. They are passionate and knowledgeable about the sport. They have been involved in many facets of the industry as players and journalists. CSI is excited to have the Vidals work with us on the USA Pool League.”
