Jay Swanson Memorial Moves to Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower As It Reaches 15th Year

This year marks the 15th year the Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament has been held. On February 12-13, 2011, the two day 9-ball event moves to Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA (www.hardtimesbellflower.com).

Young, old, novice and pro alike participate in what is considered a tournament that truly celebrates an outstanding man, Jay Swanson, and all he stood for. Swanson was called “The Gentle Giant” due to his spirit and demeanor which belied his impending physical stature.

The first “Swanee” was held September 1996 at College Billiards in San Diego, CA, where it remained until 2005. From 2006-2010 the event was held at Hollywood Billiards in Los Angeles. However, this past summer when it was announced Hollywood Billiards planned to remove many tables as part of a renovation it was decided the 192 player event would need a new home.

Mark Griffin, CSI CEO and former owner of College Billiards (Swanson’s home room) with many volunteers and the assistance of writer and pool personality Jay Helfert, have kept the memory of Swanson alive.

The “Swanee” field started with 64 players and in the past three years reached a full 192 field with 10-20 player wait list. Once again in 2011 the “Swanee” will have a guaranteed $3000 added and with a full 192 player field $4000 added. Doors open at 9 am with play starting at 10 am.

For further details, including flyer and registration visit: 15th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament Information

Due to the event’s popularity it is advised that you register in advance to secure your spot. Starting in early January, CSI will be able to accept online registration for all CSI / BCAPL / USAPL events including the “Swanee”, U.S. Bar Table Championships, the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship, the 12th U.S. One Pocket Championship, the USAPL National Championships and all divisions of the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships

The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of players’ skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.

CSI has also reclassified all active Player Members to be included in the other singles divisions (based on their individual ability).

The Advanced Division was created to add a level of play that falls between the Open Division and the Masters Division. Most of the players who have been moved into the Advanced Division were moved from the Masters Division down to the Advanced. The goal is to allow more players to participate and to further competitive opportunity.

The following new Advancement Criteria is effective June 1, 2010 and is retroactive to all players who have cashed in the singles divisions of the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships since 2005 and all recognized BCAPL state and regional rankings.

¬New Advancement Criteria Old Policy New Policy
Top 8 from Men’s Open Singles Master Master
Top 4 from Women’s Open Singles Master Master
9th-48th from Men’s Open Singles Master Advanced
5th-12th from Women’s Open Singles Master Advanced
Top 8 from Men’s Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 2 from Women’s Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 6 from Men’s Senior Singles Master Advanced
Top 3 from Women’s Senior Singles Master Advanced

Team Masters:
All Team Masters will be placed on the Advanced or Open player lists based on singles performance and known ability. The Team Master category is based on an individual’s participation on a team’s finish at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.

State Masters:
Players who are currently listed in their state as a Master player (but who have not participated in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships) may remain as a Master or be moved down to the Advanced Division based on known ability and state and regional tournament results from 2005 – 2010.

Player Members:
All new Player Members, beginning June 1, 2010 will be required to enter the Advanced or higher Singles Divisions, ranked based on known ability. New and established Player Members (who have not cashed) may request consideration to enter the Open Division, but will be assessed individually.

Players on the Advanced list may petition the BCAPL to be removed. The Advanced category is based on individual play. If we have a tournament history of that player in singles that indicates that they are not an Advanced level player, they may be removed from the list and put back into the Open division.

Petition Procedure
To petition the BCA Pool League in order to be removed from the Advanced, Master, Grand Master or Team Master list, email Bill Stock at bill@playcsipool.com or mail the request. Telephone requests will not be accepted. All requests must be in writing.

Strickland Endorses USA Pool League - Calling for a Pool “Revolution”

Earl “The Pearl” Strickland is one if not the most decorated U.S. player of his generation. Equally passionate about the sport, “the Pearl” and industry leader CueSports International (CSI) both agree it is time for a “revolution in pool” and that revolution is the USA Pool League (USAPL).

In his 27 years as a professional pool player Strickland’s record include 5 world championships, a record holding 5 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, and participating on the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team an astounding 13 times. In the past several years Strickland has devoted much of his time to holding clinics and exhibitions, including from 2008 – 2010 as a member of Team CSI. For his extraordinary accomplishments Strickland was inducted in the BCA Hall of Fame in 2006. While a member of Team CSI, Strickland became more aware of the goals CSI has for the new USAPL.

Believing many of the issues commonly associated with national handicapped pool leagues should be addressed CSI launched the USAPL in late 2009. Some of the issues the USAPL is designed to tackle are “sandbagging” and the constricting policies of tight team handicap limits. Additionally, CSI believes all players should be allowed to enter national championships to test themselves should they choose and not rely on a pyramid of local and regional tournaments in order to be allowed to compete at the national level. This is a philosophy that “the Pearl” also believes – that all players should be allowed to play.

Strickland additionally endorses the USAPL because CSI set up the USAPL to give at least 50% of all monies collected back to the amateur league members on the local level and a sizable portion of CSI’s USAPL proceeds into developing more exposure and support of professional players. “The USAPL is a league that works on behalf of the players, not one where the players work for the league. CSI puts its money where its mouth is. This I can get behind”, said Strickland

CSI is actively recruiting and screening prospective USAPL Managers. All USAPL Managers have free protected territories and use the LeagueSys online scoring and scheduling system. Currently there are active USAPL leagues in 11 U.S. states including: Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, Colorado and Maryland with new leagues being organized and developed almost weekly all over the U.S.

CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. ACS Schedules 2011 and 2012 Nationals to Conflict with BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships

Dear BCAPL supporter,

NOTICE: The ACS has scheduled their national tournament to overlap the BCAPL championships by four days in May 2011. Please be aware of this date conflict when you make plans for sanctioning or dual sanctioning this fall, and also when you make plans to attend national tournaments next spring.

Here are the dates:
Tournament                                                                  Start Date                    End Date
2011 ACS National Championships                       May 7 (Sat)                  May 14 (Sat)
2011 BCA Pool League 9-Ball Challenge              May 11 (Wed)             May 12 (Thu)
PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters*                        May 11 (Wed)             May 15 (Sun)
35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships        May 13 (Fri)                 May 21 (Sat)

* Televised professional event for spectators

Here is how the date conflict may affect YOU:

All Referees and Exhibitors – must choose between the BCAPL and ACS events, unless you pull out of the ACS event 4 days early. You simply can’t be in two places at the same time.

Some Players – If you play in the last four days of the ACS nationals (probably the team events), you will not be able to participate in BCAPL Singles Divisions, BCAPL Scotch Doubles Divisions, or in the BCA Pool League 9-Ball Challenge, which attracted more players (248) than any ACS division in 2010. We are concerned that the ACS dates will cause some players to attempt to enter divisions in both tournaments (BCAPL & ACS) … and have to forfeit later due to the conflict. That would be most unfortunate.

THE 35th BCAPL CHAMPIONSHIPS SCHEDULE HAS NOT CHANGED FOR MANY YEARS. IT IS POSTED ON THE EVENT PAGE ON PLAYBCA.COM – CLICK HERE

This decision by ACS is unprecedented. National pool leagues have ALWAYS respected each other’s dates. It is extremely difficult to understand why ACS would put this burden on ANY participants.

This ACS date conflict unfairly discriminates against any league that is impartial, or is loyal to the BCA Pool League – The ACS loyalists who care only about the ACS tournament are completely unaffected by the date conflict in 2011. Only individual Players, League Operators, Referees and Exhibitors who want to attend our event are affected by the conflict, and that is not acceptable.

We hope you will continue to choose “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” The CSI mission statement is “More choices for all players,” and we intend to deliver on that promise to the best of our ability.

If you have any questions, please contact our office at info@playCSIpool.com or (702) 719-7665.

*****Here is why you should choose the 2011 BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships****

Play with the BEST! – BCAPL has set the standard for amateur and professional events since 2004, and BCAPL has been the amateur league standard since 1978, offering the oldest, largest, most competitive, and most comprehensive championships in the U.S. The BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships will celebrate its 35th annual event at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in May 2011.

You may find this comparison between the national championships interesting:

Compare the largest:                                   BCAPL                                        ACS
Singles Division                                           1,285 entries                             128 entries
Singles payout                                              $147,910                                    $13,955
Scotch Doubles Division                             339 couples                              82 couples
Scotch Doubles payout                               $30,815                                      $8,100
Team Division                                               672 teams                                 47 teams
Team payout                                                 $158,240                                   $11,300

So, what else do you need to know?? Oh yeah, there are some …

Great new Riviera room rate specials for 2011 – The Riviera has agreed to some great room rate reductions for May 2011. They are offering a special 3-tier structure of $60/$70/$80 to reward our loyal BCAPL attendees. All rates allow for up to four people/room, and do not increase on Friday and Saturday nights.

$60/night x 8 night minimum – Perfect for all Players, Referees, Exhibitors, and others who plan to attend most of the event. This special tournament rate is available until the normal reservations cutoff date (April 12), or until group room nights begin to sell out.

$70/night, booked by January 31 – A great early bird special for everybody who makes plans by January.

$80/night, regular rate – For all who make their reservations after January 31.

Riviera Registered Guests Specials – All rate tiers get the same 3 FREE slot tournaments, food & drink specials, and other restaurant and show specials that were provided this year.

No “Hotel Room Vouchers” are required by the Riviera The ACS is adding a $50 to $125 “Hotel Room Voucher” fee to every entry into each division of their 2011 tournament. According to their web site, this money will be refunded only if you stay at the Tropicana during the event.

Team CSI Heading for the Northwest With Strickland and Schmidt
By Press Release - 2010-08-11

Mark Cantrill of Team CSI (CueSports International) today announced that they will be heading back out on the road with Earl (The Pearl) Strickland and (Mr 400) John Schmidt. Team CSI will be performing fun and exciting exhibitions and also holding Pool Clinics at each location. "We have made a group decision to help make our pool clinics more affordable to the average pool and and billiards enthusiast. Although we fill our clinics 90% of the time at the usual $200.00 fee, we are sensitive to the current economy and so we have decided to lower the The Pool Clinic fee to only $100.00 per person. We hope this will make it easier for all to attend." Said Cantrill.

The Team CSI Exhibitions will be the usual format of fun, Earl will perform Trick Shots and stroke shots while telling his stories of life on the road as a player. Mr 400 will run a rack or two of 9-ball while talking through the strategy as he goes, John will also play a mini challenge match against a local hot shot or champion. We then draw names for the chance to play on either team Strickland or Team Schmidt in a rack of scotch doubles, we do multiple drawings for this so and many people as possible get a chance to play. This is usually alot of fun. Then of course Team CSI will be on hand for Pictures, autographs etc. All in all a great night.

"I'm really looking forward to this trip, T-Wheels (Cantrill) usually has us go to places at the coldest or hottest time of the year. This time it looks like we are going to be in a beautiful area at the best time of year, I can't wait" Schmidt commented.

CSI Expands BCA Pool League Player Rating Categories and Adds New Division

The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of player’s skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.

CSI has also reclassified all active Player Members to be included in the other singles divisions (based on their individual ability).
The Advanced Division was created to add a level of play that falls between the Open Division and the Master Division.

New Advancement Criteria                              Old Policy          New Policy
Top 8 from Men’s Open                                   Master                Master
Top 4 from Women’s Open Singles                 Master                Master
9th-48th from Men’s Open Singles                   Master                Advanced
5th-12th from Women’s Open Singles              Master                Advanced
Top 8 from Men’s Player Member Singles       Master                Advanced
Top 2 from Women’s Player Member Singles  Master                Advanced
Top 6 from Men’s Senior Singles                     Master                Advanced
Top 3 from Women’s Senior Singles                Master                Advanced

Team Masters:
All Team Masters will be placed on the Advanced player list.

Effective June 1, 2010
The following significant changes were made to the 2010-2011 Edition of the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League.
Please email Bill Stock at bills@playcsipool.com with any questions regarding these and any BCAPL rules.

1. The Game of 10-Ball has been changed to Call Shot. In addition, how safeties are regulated has changed, as has the progress of the game with respect to continuing play. Please review the entire section on 10-Ball (pages 42-44 of the 2010-2011 Edition.

2. The definitions of Combination Shot and Non-obvious Shot have been expanded, and Rules 1.17.1, 1.17.2 and Applied Ruling 1.17 have been changed to meet the expanded definitions.

3. Rule 1.38.4: Restoration no longer allowed after foul caused by placing ball in hand.

4. 8-Ball: The penalty for any foul on the break has changed from ball in hand in the kitchen to ball in hand. Rules 2.3.3(b), 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.4.2(a), and 2.4.3 have been changed and consolidated to reflect the change.

5. Rule 2.4.2(c) has been deleted. If the breaker makes the 8-ball and fouls, the incoming player may no longer require the breaker to re-rack and break again.

Other minor changes throughout the 2010-2011 Edition clarify, but do not change, the intent of the rules. In addition, many new Applied Rulings have been added.

We recommend that you thoroughly review the General Rules, specific games rules, and the Applied Rulings to ensure that you have the best possible understanding of them.

Please call (702) 719-7665 if you wish to be sent a pocket sized copy of the 2010-2011 Edition or you can read the rules online under the League Tab on BCAPL home page: www.playbca.com.
