BCA Pool League Referee Program
Referee Class Schedule is here
How do I become a BCA Pool League Referee?
Entry into the BCAPL referee program is a two-part process. Here’s how it works:
Part 1 requires you to attend a BCAPL National Referee Training Class. Classes usually last 3-4 days and include formal instruction regarding professional conduct, player management, proper positioning, making judgment calls, and dispute resolution to name a few. We’ll show you how to approach the table, assess the situation, gather the facts and be prepared to make the call.
You’ll receive a complete review of the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League, with emphasis on the General Rules, 8 and 9 Ball Rules, and Referee Authority. You’ll learn the physics of pool and view actual demonstrations on the table. And of course, we’ll prepare you to take and pass your final written examination. You must pass this exam before you can take part 2.
Part 2 requires you to perform a minimum of 8 hours of actual referee duties at a BCAPL sanctioned event. You will be observed and evaluated by your instructors, other designated BCAPL referees, or both while on duty. You will only be asked to perform duties that your classroom training prepared you to do.
The BCAPL offers its National Referee Training Class each May in Las Vegas at the National 8-Ball Championships. This provides you with the opportunity to take both parts of the course at one time in one location. If you cannot come to Las Vegas in May, the BCAPL plans to offer the class at other locations during the year. Refer to this website for announcements of future dates and locations.
Classes outside of Las Vegas may or may not be held in conjunction with a BCAPL tournament. Accordingly, if there is no tournament at the site of the class, you may take Part 2 at any BCAPL sanctioned event within one year from the date you passed Part 1. However, you must contact Bill Stock to make these arrangements.
When you come to the class you will enter with the title of National Referee in Training (NRT). You retain that designation until you either pass the course or one year elapses from the date you entered, whichever is sooner. Passing both parts of course entitles you to apply for immediate promotion to National Referee. Failure to pass the course entitles you to repeat it at no additional cost.
To begin, just fill out the application and send it to Bill Stock. The fee is $125 and includes all materials. You’ll receive a current copy of the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League, along with a referee shirt and BCAPL NRT insignia. You may purchase additional shirts and patches from the BCAPL.
